The official website for VLC Player has been inaccessible in India for a few months now. The Indian government banned it, possibly after a security incident, but that won’t necessarily stop Indian users from getting it. Right now, it appears that Indian ISPs are blocking VideoLAN’s website as well as mobile downloads of VLC Player, though some ISPs haven’t restricted Google Play Store downloads. Those who already have VLC Player installed can still use it....

Both Core i3 setups pulled 89 watts in Prime 95 or 25% less power than the i5-4690, which used only 6% less power than the i7. Again both Core i3 models allowed for roughly the same system consumption figures, making them 23% lighter on fuel than the i5-4690. The i5 and i7 consumed similar levels of power with the former using just 5% less. This time the Core i3 system consumed 77 watts – 21% lower than the i5-4690 and 27% less than the i7-4790....

It was back in February when Intel suspended shipments of industrial processors to Russia and its ally Belarus in compliance with international sanctions introduced following the invasion of Ukraine. Now the company has gone a step further and suspended all operations in Russia. Intel said in a press release that it had implemented business continuity measures to minimize disruption to its global operations. The chipmaker added that it condemns Russia’s war against Ukraine and calls for a swift return to peace....

Microsoft last May announced that it would be killing off Internet Explorer in its traditional form this year. Now, the near three-decade-old software is about to be retired. The browser’s desktop app will go out of support tomorrow on the most recent versions of Windows 10—it’s not available on Windows 11. Soon afterward, Microsoft will push out a Windows Update that completely removes Internet Explorer from Windows 10 devices altogether and redirects users to Edge if they try to access the app....

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey in a recent tweet recalled the glory days of the earlier Internet, describing platforms like Usenet, IRC, the web and even e-mail (with PGP) as amazing. “Centralizing discovery and identity into corporations really damaged the Internet,” Dorsey added. He even conceded he was partially to blame and regrets it. Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2006 and became its first CEO, just as Myspace was nearing peak popularity and Facebook was preparing to surpass it....

Lenovo sent along the optional pen ($40) for our evaluation, which works with the N-Trig DuoSensor digitizer. The first of only a few possible places to use the pen is in the pre-installed Notes Mobile app. This app essentially turns the tablet into a notepad, allowing you to use the pen to take notes or draw directly onscreen. You can elect to keep your dictation as-is or have the app transcribe it into a few different fonts....

My first experience with the Snapdragon 800 was in the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, and there’s not much difference between the Ultra and the G2 in terms of performance. Both systems feature the Snapdragon 800 with the same clock speed (2.26 GHz), and the same amount of RAM (2 GB), so later on when we get to the benchmarking section, the devices should register the same performance. When using the device for basic tasks, it’s clear that the LG G2 is powered by one of the speediest ARM-based chips you can get....

Note that this typically won’t work for AMD users as the GeForce GTX 460 cannot be set to handle PhysX, however using a software mod (Hybrid PhysX mod v1.04ff) it is possible to set things up in proper fashion. By adding in the GeForce GTX 460 to handle PhysX we were able to boost the performance of the GeForce GTX 480 by 24%, which is not that bad. The GeForce GTX 470 saw the exact same performance boost as frame rates went from 38fps to 47fps....

We were impressed by the LGA1156 platform efficiency when we tested the Intel Core i5 750 for our review earlier this week. This graph brings some additional information as we have a second CPU using the exact same platform. At idle the power consumption difference between the Core i7 860 and Core i5 750 CPUs is negligible, while at full load the Core i7 uses more power but stays way ahead of the Core i7 920 and its X58-based motherboard....

Researcher Privacy 1st (Alex Kleber) analyzed seven different Apple developer accounts, all managed by the same Chinese dev. They note that the apps abuse the Mac App Store in several ways, the most common being that they contain hidden malware able to receive commands from a server (command-and-control). This allows the apps to pass the App Store’s initial security checks before the malware is activated. In some apps, Apple’s review team saw a completely different user interface than what appears in the final version, as the developers could alter the UI remotely....

During a Q&A session on Tuesday, chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth told Reality Labs staff to expect changes within the division to be announced this week, reports Reuters, which saw a summary of the CTO’s comments. A Meta spokesperson confirmed that Bosworth told Reality Labs employees the division would have to abandon some projects as the company could not afford to keep funding them, while others would be put on hold....
