The Crysis 3 and BioShock Infinite benchmarking might have been tightly contested, but Metro Redux’s results aren’t. Here the overclocked GTX 970 SLI setup was 15% faster than the overclocked R9 290s (prior to any overclocking the GTX 970s were still 14% faster than the R9 290s). It’s interesting to note that the GTX 970 SLI setup crushed the R9 290s by a 47% margin at 2560x1600, though this was reduced to just 14% at 3840x2160. We also see that while the GTX 980 was faster than the R9 290X at 2560x1600, it is slightly slower at 3840x2160.
The frame time performance for both the SLI and Crossfire setups remains strong, though it is again interesting to note the 2560x1600 performance of the GTX 970s. Here we see that the 2560x1600 frame time performance is only slightly better than that of the R9 290s despite the fact that the frame rate performance was considerably higher.
Again we see that while the GTX 970 SLI cards crushed at 2560x1600, they fell behind the R9 290 Crossfire setup at 3840x2160. This was seen when comparing single card performance as well. The GTX 970 was 7fps faster than the R9 290 at 2560x1600, only to become 6fps slower at 3840x2160. In the end, the overclocked GTX 970 SLI cards were 14% slower than the overclocked R9 290s.
The frame time performance shows the GTX 970 SLI cards delivering blistering fast performance at 2560x1600 coupled with relatively weak 3840x2160 results, giving the R9 290s an edge when testing at 4K.
